Angler Missing

An angler from Fuengirola went missing whilst out night fishing off rocks in Vélez-Malaga Thursday evening.

Valetín (60) had decided to go fishing at the western end of Lagos, next to the N-340 main road. He parked his car just off the road at the top of a very low cliff. The parking area is also a picnic area with benches and tables.

The sea state had moderate waves due to the winds of between 60 and 70 kph – Axarquía was on Orange Alert from 06.00h Friday with 3-metre waves.

A local passed that way around 20.00h and saw him there. He also went for a walk in the morning and found all the angler’s equipment there and his car, but sign of the angler.

His backpack was also there with his personal docs (ID card, etc) and mobile phone. He was reported missing by his sons and the coast guards sent out a rescue helicopter (Helimar 205) to search for him, and the rescue launch, Salvamar Hamal.

However, the search failed to locate him. Meanwhile, the three police forces, (Guardia, Nacional and Local) have been making enquiries.

Police are working on the theory that he fell into the sea and was swept our by currents during the night.
