A reader writes in to make it known what is happening in Maro concerning a grant from Las Cuevas de Nerja to Maro, which is allegedly not being spent by Nerja Town Hall as it was intended
During the last council meeting in Nerja, Councillor Patricia Gutiérez, who is also the Spokesperson for the PSOE, brought up the upcoming donation of 30,000 euros by the association Cuevas de Nerja, to the village of Maro, to be spent on cultural events and activities.
She was cut short rather abruptly by Mayor Armijo, who told her that the entire amount will be donated to the church for the restoration of the Virgin’s throne and that’s that.
After decades of faithful duty, I guess the throne could use a little freshening up, but I’m sure it wasn’t the intention of the association to have the entire donation spent on the throne alone – and this is not even taking into consideration that restoration and repairs of religious artefacts should be financed by the diocese of Málaga, not by the public.
The village of Maro hardly has any facilities for cultural events or activities, but the ones we do have could do with a little upgrade too: the sala de multiusos could use a few foldable tables to cater for the increasing success of the free chess sessions on Tuesday night; a foldable ping pong table would be a valuable asset too, since the one at the plaza next to the hogar has been removed without a reason a few months ago; there is a growing interest in having music classes for children in the sala de multiusos, for which we will need some musical instruments; the neighbourhood association would like to organise movie nights there as well, for which a projector and screen are needed…
In short, even a small fragment of those 30.000 euros would benefit the village in many different ways, 5,000 euros could transform Maro from a sleepy little village into a thriving one. The other 25.000 euros can then be used for the throne, but I, for one, would like to see the detailed invoice justifying the expenses…
