Flooding in Guadix

As the rain pours down on the Costa Tropical, the Valley de Lecrín and the Alpujarra, spare a thought for those living in the north east of the province, where it is raining with a vengeance.

Guadix Town Hall asked people to stay at home and not to venture out, where possible, because of the rain Monday night and all through this morning, which has not let up.

A flash flood, for instance, caused the rail service between La Calahorra and Guadix to be closed down.

The Mayor of Guadix, Jesús Lorente, explained that kids were sent home from two school this morning (Divina Infantita and Padre Poveda). Municipal buildings such as the Social Servces one and the municipal library were inundated, as well.

Worst hit is the Barrio de las Cuevas, where walls have collapsed and soil and stones washed away. Consequently, access to these areas has been closed to avoid unfortunate incidents.

The Emergency Coordination Centre, 112, has been bombarded with calls all over this area; which has been the worse affected in the province. Countless homes and business have had storm water spilling in, including even the Iglesia de Santa María de las Lágrimas on Calle Barradas.

The roof of the municipal theatre, Mira Amescua, which is in the Plaza de la Constitución, sprung a leak in the early hours of this morning.

All this required the assistance of the municipal and Granada fire service with their pumping equipment around five this morning.

The river that crosses the city, Río Verde, (see photo) is raging along with flood water so there are many videos of it on social media. According to the Mayor, the river has climbed 2.5 metres above its normal level.
