Dead Dolphin in Torrenueva

It's been a while since the cadaver of large marine life was washed up onto a beach along Costa Tropical. This time it was in Torrenueva Costa.

Yesterday, early morning beachwalkers came across the body of a dolphin on the shorline more or less opposite Calle Juan de Garay.

When we say early morning, we mean around 05.30h, which was when the find was first reported. It was some two metres long and around 70kg in weight.

Both the Guardia Civil and the Policía Local were turned out. They contacted the Councillor for the Environment, who in turn informed the Centros de Recuperación de Especies Amenazadas (CREA) de Andalucía. The latter took charge of the cadaver.

The supplied photo was taken by Antonio Martín Olid, who was amongst the early morning beach walkers. He said that once informed, the police arrived promptly.

As an aside, unless we are mistaken, somebody by that name used to be the socialist Chairman of the Provincial Board of Culture back in the mid 80s, as well as a teacher at IES Antigua Sexi secondary school in Almuñécar. If so, he must be in his middle 80s by now.

Anyway, back to the dead dolphin… To date, we don’t know what caused its death – i.e., there has been no autopsy report issued by the protected-species centre.

Julio de la Rosa, Chairman of the Aula del Mar in Granada, informed the provincial press that when dolphins are washe up, it is because they approach the beaches when they are dying from an accident with a boat or natural causes.
