Franco’s Victims

A group of students from the Universidad de Granada que, lead by Professor Francisco Carrión, is working on desenterring victims of Franco's repression.

The bodies of the two individuals that are being exhumed are at Padul municipal cementry; not inside in niches, but in unmarked graves covered in quick lime.

This is the third campaign carried out by the university in Padul at the cementry, with the previous two campaings being carried out in 2021 and 2022. During these previous campaigns that managed to recover the remains of three women and two men.

Back to the present work, besides the two skeletal remains recovered, the team have found six more victims in different fosses whose remains will also be recovered

This work, which is included within the Universitiy of Granada’s Memoria, will continue into the beginning of this month, thanks to a grant of 25,600 euros from the Federación Española de Municipios y Provincias.

Whilst the exhumation work has been going on, researchers have been examining the bones recovered in the previous campaigns: four men and a woman, aged between 25 and 55-years old, who had been executed not only with military fire arms, but also with hunting pieces, which indicate, perhaps, that it was done by indiviuals in the form of lynchings.

The researches have been interviewing possible relatives and taking DNA samples.

Editorial comment: it is shameful that it has taken 90 years for relatives to be able to give a decent burial to Franco’s victims.
