The workers union, Unión General de Trabajadores (UGT) has voiced strong criticism to the Provincial Council for lowering the minimum threshold for the number of personnel in fire stations, instead of increasing the number of personnel available.
Bear in mind that during the summer months, municipal fire services very often are called out, not only for house fires in urban areas, but also to back up Infoca units tackling hill and forest fires.
The union claims that there are fewer personnel available on a day-to-day basis than before the conservatives took over the Provincial Council – (there could be a bit of politiqueo [political manoeuvring] behind the complaint) which is the complete opposite to their electoral pledges concerning the fire services.
The union had asked for a minimum of five personnel on duty during shift work before the socialist-held Provincial Council, during meetings with the City Council. The PP, who were then in opposition backed this call and pledged that this requirement would be met if they were voted in.
