You assume that mountain-rescue missions are a thing of the winter and snow but nowadays there are just as many people up there in the summer.
The Guardia Civil mountain-rescue service had to carry out two rescue missions on Sierra Nevada this last weekend; one in the area of the Laguna de la Yeguas and the other within the Güéjar Sierra area of this mountain range.
The first rescue was carried out on the Saturday and involved two hikers walking between the Pico Veleta and the Laguna de las Yeguas. One of them had health problems and suffered a paralisis, according to the Guardia Civil. Rather than aparalisis, perhaps it might have been simply a panic attack but it’s not clear from the press release.
When the two-man team found the hikers, they took them to Pradollano, which is where the hikers had set out from, so it doesn’t appear to have been a paralisis but rather a momentary seizure.
The second rescue happened on Sunday. The Guardia Civil received a call out concerning a long-distance runner who had injured his ankle/Achilles tendon along a route within the municipality of Güéjar Sierra. The runner had requested that he be given assistance to return to his parked vehicle.
The rescue team made their way to the Refugio La Herrería, in Güéjar Sierra, where they located him. They picked him up in their patrol vehicle and took him to the street on which he had left his car. He told them that he would drive himself to a medical centre and that there was no need for them to take him.
