Officers Attacked with Clubs

You might well have heard of the punch up in, Tablones (Órgiva) just over a week ago between local clans which ended with two officers getting beaten with clubs.

GRA ALP Guardia Civil Post OrgivaNow, when we say, ‘clans,’ we’re not speaking about Scottish Highlanders, but of extended families of ethnic origin, who may or may not be of Spanish nationality in which family honour is sacred and large knives are not restricted to the kitchen.

Got it?

Well, a dispute broke out that quickly led to fisty cuffs and by the time that the Guardia Civil arrived most of the ruckus had died down. Unfortunately, one of the clan’s member had previously phoned for reinforcement, who dutifully turned up and laid into the officers. Bear in mind that when two clans clash and the police turn up, the rival clans are instantly united in a common cause… the Guardia Civil.

Armed with Spanish clubs (garrotes) they wasted no time on introductions and idle chatter but instead jumped on the two officers, one of whom received blows to the head and back and the other on his arm and shoulder. Now, the traditional Guardia Civil tricorn hat would have offered some protection but the modern beret or kepi do not.

The aggressors then turned around, jumped into their car and buggered off, relying on the milling crowd to slow any pursuit down. Fortunately, the officers recognised them and went about finding them, which wasn’t easy as they were lying low, so the arrest took several days.

This all happened in the early hours of that Sunday in the middle of a verbena (knees up) to celebrate San Marcos. The two clans have been after each other’s blood for years and this encounter was not the first.

The Mayor of Órgiva, Raúl Orellana Vílchez, the very next day called for calm so that another incident would not spark off. He also called for the police to be on the alert.
