The Almuñécar Councillor for Agriculture and the Rural Environment, Carlos Ferrón, says that teams are out eliminating caterpillar nests in pine trees.
These Town-Hall employees are targeting caterpillar nests (which look like white candy floss) in the municipality’s parks and gardens, as this kind of caterpillar is highly toxic and causes necrosis in the mouths of dogs, if they eat them.
At the moment they are concentrating on the Parque Mediterráneo, which is next to Playa Cabria in Taramay.
In colder climates; i.e., inland Granada, the most effective form of eliminating a nest is using an airgun, believe it or not: the nest protects the lavae from the cold so once it is holed, they literally died from the outside cold. There are also baited traps on the trunks of the trees.
