Municipal Market Work Restarts

The municipal-market construction has lain dormant since the end of summer but within days it will begin again.

Work will recommence on the 5th of February and consequently access to Avenida de Europa will again become complicated starting on the 29th of January.

The building work is being carried out by CHM Obras e Infraestructuras, but they brought it to a standstill because the original budget agreed with the Town Hall for the construction no long covered the cost of materials, which had gone up considerably in the meantime.

This followed numerous meetings between both parties to reach an accord, which appears to have been found. In fact, new construction material is already being brought to the site in preparation for the recommencement of work.

The whole municipal-market affair has been shrouded in accusations and underhand solutions carried out by the Town Hall: knowing that demolition work would be met by street protests, the then Mayor, Trinidad Herrera, used the 2020 lockdown to carry out the task with possible protesters ‘safely kept at home.’ In fact, bringing into the municipality an outside work force during the enforced isolation of residents was highly controversial.

There was also a lengthy legal battle between the company that had the lease for the underground car park beneath the old municipal market, Hermanos García e Hijos, and the Town Hall.

Yet here we find ourselves today and work set to recommence on the 5th of February, meaning that if the rest of the building work goes to plan, it should be open in time for Christmas.
