Around the middle of last month, it was announced that the live-music venue in La Herradura, La Cochera, was having financial difficulties and sent out an SOS.
For much of its existence it was in the hands of Antonio, its founder, but passed to the hands of a group of young people, some of whom are from Israel after he retired. La Cochera, as a musical venue is of the same veteran status as Robert’s Top in Almuñécar within the municipality.
The problem is that the venue doesn’t appear to meet modern requirements for such a premises and it would cost around 30,000 euros. That’s the trouble when a business premises, changes hand; a new opening licence is needed requiring all the obligatory requirements that have come into force since the premises had its previous opening licence. It’s pretty much the same when you buy a house; you have to get a new contract with the utility companies and you’ll quite likely find that the electrical wiring in the house is no longer considered valid.
Until now La Cochera has been allowed to host live music using provisional licences but they are no longer available and so they closed leaving the crew of ten out of a job.
The problem with live music is soundproofing requirements and that can be very, very expensive – ask José Montalvo at Robert’s Top. As for safety measures, things got a whole lot tougher following the discotheque fire in Murcia were people died.
The people behind La Cochera have a bank account where donations can be made and any questions that you may have, if you’re thinking of donating, you can address to info@lacochera.club.
