In the early hours of Friday morning, the municipal police stopped a vehicle in front of the Paseo Marítimo in Torre del Mar, as the car had no headlights on.

It was 02.00h. When the officers approached, the driver was not wearing his seatbelt, either, and there was a young child in the back, also without a seatbelt on. The driver showed obvious signs of inebriation.

The officers breathalysed the 46-year-old Romanian and come up with a reading of 0.7mg per litre of expelled air, which is six times over the legal limit.

The man, who was corpulent, adopted a defiant and belligerent attitude. He sat on the ground in front of the patrol car after placing his 6-year-old son on top of its bonnet.

He warned the police that he was ex-services and had a criminal record for armed robbery and then started to hit and kick the police officers, so they radioed for an ambulance to attend with a tranquilliser.

It soon arrived and between them all they managed to give the man an injection with a powerful tranquilliser. The officers also managed to contact the mother of the child in order for her to come and collect him.

The man will face several charges, including resisting arrest, aggression, as well as the traffic-related ones.
