Beachgoers in La Herradura on Wednesday the 24th of last month were surprised when a young flamingo made a surprise visit to the beach.
The bird, barely an adult, was not ringed and looked a bit lost as he bobbed around just off the beach. One family decided that it needed a bit of help so they gathered it up and took it to the Lifeguard Post and handed it over.
The lifeguards on duty contacted the Centro de Recuperación de Especies Amenazadas (CREAS) who a little later arrived to carry it off to their animal hospital & refuge centre in
Every year, thousands of wild animals are found injured, sick or debilitated. These specimens require very diverse care, from mere rest and food to delicate surgical interventions, before being returned to their natural habitat.
The Andalusian Network of Endangered Species Recovery Centres (CREA) was created in 2001 precisely for this purpose. The centre in Granada, CREA El Blanqueo is situated along the old, Sierra Nevada Road near kilometre point seven, between Pinos Genil and Cenes de la Vega.
If you do come across an animal in this situation you can phone them on 670 945 699 or email them at crea.elblanqueo.cagpds@juntadeandalucia.es
