The Mayor of Vélez de Benaudalla, Francisco Gutiérrez Bautista, has published a municipal edict announcing possible water cuts in the village.
This has been issued because of water scarcity in one of the main sources from which the village receives its domestic water supply.
“Owing to consecutive, dry years resulting in a scarcity in rainfall, one of the main wells from which the village draws its water (Fuente Nueva) has run dry,” reads the edict, continuing, “As a provisional and exception measure; i.e., until the problem is solved, there could be a series of water cuts without prior notice, even though we are doing all that we can to avoid this.”
The village is left with only one water source, (El Torchal) which means outlying areas of the municipality might find themselves without water during the night.
Consequently, the Town Hall calls for responsible use of drinking water so that more restrictive measures are not required.
