A man in his late 60s was knocked down in Torre del Mar along the N-340 around 16.00h on Thursday, resulting in his death.

The accident took place on the stretch between Caleta de Vélez and Torre del Mar, next to the Repsol garage, when a BMW went up onto the pedestrian footpath, hitting the 69-year-old man.

The victim was rushed to the Hospital Comarcal de la Axarquía, but succumbed to his injuries around 21.00h.

Apart from the fact that it had been raining heavily, the cause of the accident is not known. However, police believe that the 24-year-old driver had been travelling at excessive speed given the road-surface condition, causing him to lose control of the vehicle.

He was tested for alcohol & drugs but the readings came back negative.

There had been another fatal incident at the beginning of February this year in Vélez-Málaga, when two people were run over by a car in Almayate. Although it was a hit & run incident, the police were finally able to identify and arrest the driver.
