Granada Offshore Wind Farms

Two companies have come forward so far with plans to build offshore wind farms off the Costa Tropical.

COS Offshore Windfarm AreaWe did an article on the 1st of March about this kind of energy-generating infrastructure, which you might like to read first and come back to this one before continuing.

The two companies that want to build these floating wind farms are Capital Energy and IberBlue Wind. The former plans to build 34 wind turbines, each capable of generating 15 megawatts, giving a total output of 510 megawatts.

The sea in the area where they intend to build the floating wind farm is between 700 and 900 metres deep, 27 kilometres off the coast.

To build such installations the company would have to invest 2,000-million euros, needing a work force of 1,500 in the construction process. At the moment, they are in the initial stages of the project; i.e., producing an environmental-impact study, although they are already sure that it will not affect fish-breeding areas.

IberBlue Wind, on the other hand, is a consortium and has named its projected, wind farm, La Pinta, which will be located off the provincial limits of Granada and Almería.

It will have 55 wind turbines giving a total output of 990 megawatts and will lay between 15 and 35 kilometres from the coast. This output is enough to supply the energy needs for 670,000 homes. The consortium would have to spend 2,500-million euros and would employ 3,300 personnel during its construction.

There will be other companies bidding, more than likely, so one, both or neither could get the go-ahead from the Spanish Government.
