Mine Collapse in Barcelona

Three people died yesterday in a mining accident in Suria (Barcelona). Emergency services received a call out around 08.55h.

SPN Mine Collapse MR23A collapsing roof of a shaft in this potassium-salt mine came down on three geologists resulting in their deaths. The men were at a depth of 900 metres below the surface when it happened.

At first, it was thought that more people could have been trapped in this mine belonging to ICL Iberia and that the victims were miners, but the company has since clarified that neither is the case.

At the moment the emergency services are trying to reach the bodies of the victims to recover them and bring them to the surface.

The geologists were carrying out topographic prospection and safety checks. Two of them were students at the the UPC Manresa and the third had graduated a week ago and was gaining job experience.

This was not the first accident in this particular mine, as ten years ago two miners died in a mining-shaft colapse.
