No Caseta for Oppostion

ALM:LHR Fiestas CasetasConvergencia Andaluza puts this down to Mayor Ruiz Joya feeling nervous about the upcoming, municipal-election results. Although the PP has held the mayoralty for the last 12 years, they have managed this by forming coalitions to keep Juan Carlos Benavides Yeguas out of office, despite his party being the most voted one each time.

According to the CA, on the first of February the terms for awarding space for fairground casetas were approved. These terms state that those who submit requests for space will be accepted on a first-come; first served basis. This is were the trap lies, the CA considers, because the terms were not publicised via a press release, as is the custom ; they were only posted on a notice board at the entrance to the Town Hall.

However, the CA claims that the Mayor did inform the other parties; his coalition allies, all of whom immediately put forward their requests, thus garanteeing space for their temporary bars (casetas). When the CA did eventually find out, they say, all the available space was taken so they were left out.

Editorial comment: unfortunately, this method of informing about decisions taken by posting a document on a notice board  is what residents have to put up with, so in that sense, “welcome to our world.” This form of notification is remiscent of Station Standing Orders (RAF) which are posted on a board and if you haven’t read them, that’s your fault. Finally, it should be said that Mr Benavides, when he was in power, was no stranger to this kind of practice.
