The Environmental Department within Salobreña Town Hall has commenced a campaign to eradicate poisonous-caterpillar nests within areas of municipal responsibility.

The campaign is a preventative one, which uses a parasite, Bacillus Thuringiensis; a biological pesticide used worldwide. It is therefore non-chemical but effective treatment.

Some of the places around town that are being ‘treated’ is the Colegio Cervantes in Lobres, along the road leading up to the cemetery, the Camino del Gambullón, the Paseo de las Flores, as well as gardened areas near Casa Roja.

Apart from infecting caterpillar nest with the bacteria (which is commonly found in the ground/soil) they are also removing the nests once treated.

The Environmental Department reminds residents that children and pets should be kept clear of these caterpillars when they appear, nose to tail, on the ground, as they are highly poisonous.
