The City Hall of Granda has opened an investigation against officers with the municipal police force for shooting birds within its grounds with an air rifle.
The incident allegedly took place during a night shift. The bodies of the birds were found littering the ground of an inner courtyard used for parking, by cleaning staff the next morning, who reported their find.
Investigating officers have requisitioned the CCTV footage corresponding to that area of the police station.
“Upon viewing the footage, said officers were present, amongst whom was Officer A who was using an airgun and had a dead bird in his hand, as did officers B, C, D & E. They moved around as a group, shining torches up trees and other places were the birds were,” reads the preliminary investigation report. The names of the officers have been omitted and substituted for letters.
Although the night in question happened several months ago, it is now that the incident is being investigated.
The Councillor for Citizen Safety; i.e., the civilian head of the police department, apart from informing that an investigation is underway, she would go no further, she said, until the investigation has reached conclusion and the course of disciplinary action decided upon, if deemed necessary.
