Motril Film Festival

MOT FIlm Festival JA23 La DespandaThe themes that the film/documentaries will cover are the Nazi use of slave labour involving Spaniards who had escaped Franco’s regime only to fall into the hands of the Nazis with Franco’s blessing. Amongst those worked to death were people from Motril and the rest of the comarca.

Another theme is how Franco used the Spanish, naval units loyal to his cause to terrorise civilians, including the naval shelling of Motril.

This festival, which is put together by the Asociación 14 de Abril, will run from the 27th of January to the 8th of March and will dedicate this year’s film selection to honour Capitán Federico Angulo, who led the defence of Motril against advancing Nacionalista (Franco) troops.

This military officer who remained loyal to the Republic was hunted down and imprisoned by the victorious regime and executed in Burgos in October 1938, six months before the end of the war.

The poet, composer and singer, Carmen Agredano, will provide the musical side of the festival with a performance of La Nana de la Hierbabuena (Wild Mint Lullaby), which is the predominant music in the film La Voz Dormida. This song won a Premio Goya in 2012 as the best original song. Another number that she will sing is Alpargatas de Sangre (Bloodied Rope Sandals) in homage to La Desbandá (the massacre of fleeing civilians before advancing Franco troops in 1937).

The festival will be held in Teatro Calderón de la Barca in Motril, except for the conference, Tópicos y Mitos de la Marina Franquista, which will be held in the Museo Hernández Quero on Wednesday the 8th of February at 19.00h. The festival programme runs on the: 27th & 31st of January and the 2nd, 4th & 8th of February.

The Asociación 14 de Abril also invites residents of the Costa Tropical to participate in the XVII commemorative march that will take place on the 5th of February. It will set off from the Parque Botánico El Majuelo in Almuñécar and end at the mouth of Río Guadalfeo in Salobreña.
