Reader: Too Many Trees

A reader comments on this morning's water-protest article saying that perhaps there are too many thirsty trees for the available water supply.

LHR Pines cut down on Cerro GordoIn the Periana local area and villages there is no water from its wells, due to drought, but also due to the intense irrigation by farmers further afield.

So, if the water from Rules Reservoir is used to irrigate both legal and illegal fields of water-guzzling crops, then once gone, that’s it!

People in the local area lining up to get buckets of water, so do we keep water for villagers and townspeople or landowners’ crops?

Yes, it’s awful that many will go bankrupt with no crop yield. Yet, maybe we have just too many crops? Trees cut down to clear land for subtropical fruits.

Water, hmmm… Let the townspeople and villagers eat cake!

The local conifers need very little water, unlike the cash crops. They also reduce soil erosion and without them the effects of flash flooding would be greater
