The ceiling of the church in El Trapiche (Vélez-Málaga) collapsed, raining down wooden supports and plaster .
It was when they opened Iglesia San Isidro to hold a mass on Thursday evening that they discovered the floor and pews under all the debris, leaving those present gaping. .
As there is only one religious ceremony a month, it’s possible that it happened days ago, perhaps longer. So, the good news was that nobody was hurt
Consequently, an architect used by the Dioceses of Málaga, Pablo Pastor, had a look to quantify the damage and assess the stability of what remains of the ceiling.
At the moment what is visible is the structure under the roofing, holding it in place.
Apparently, the parishioners had been waiting since February 2019, when the village had been flooded by a burst pipeline belonging to the Embalse La Viñuela, for repair work to be done. Now the amount of damage is obviously much worse.
