Mercadona has issued a warning that spammers are sending out phishing emails under the supermarket's name in order to obtain a victim's personal info.
Mercadona issued the warning through social media (Twitter), reproducing the text of the false Mercadona emails: “¡Felicidades! Ha sido elegido para participar en nuestro programa de fidelización gratis” (Congratulations! You have been chosen to participate in our free, loyalty scheme.)
Furthermore, the bogus email tells the recipient that they have won a Mercadona, discount card worth 500 euros. Of course, to obtain that you have to click on a link marked “Confirma ya.” If you click on it, you will be transferred to a webpage where you have to enter your person info…
The supermarket chain states: “in Mercadona, we do not hand out gift cards – be careful and do not fall into the trap.” Instead recipients of these scam emails are invited to inform the supermarket chain via their social media pages.
