The second year of the annual Media Maratón Tajos de Alhama BTT had a tragic outcome when one of the participants died of a heart attack.
A 49-year-old man collapsed in the area of Alhama de Granada known as the Cerro Naranjo.
Protección Civil, whose task it is to provide support during events, were on duty and were consequently on hand to attend to the man.
They immediately applied CPR but by the time that an ambulance arrived with paramedics onboard, there was nothing that could be done for the victim.
A total of 260 participants took part in this 48-KM sporting event, which has a climb of 1,500 metres along its course.
Update: the victim was Salvador Luque from Loja. Cause of death confirmed: heart attack. He had no previous heart conditions.
