Three Work-Place Accidents

There have been three work-place accidents this month, two of which resulted in deaths; a street cleaner, a fairground attraction owner and a factory worker.

ECO Calahonda Cleaner DiesOn the Costa Tropical in Calahonda, a 46-year-old street cleaner fainted and collapsed just as he was finishing his shift (noon) First, his fellow workers tried to revive him as did medical staff who had soon arrived. However, he never recovered consciousness and died.

The man seriously injured in Albolote on Friday the 5th when a storage tank ruptured and dumped a mixture of sulphuric acid and vegetable oil on him. He was rushed to Granada’s main hospital and placed in the ICU. Unfortunately, doctors lost the battle to save him and he succumbed from his injuries yesterday.

Finally, on the 4th during the Algarinejo (Loja) fiestas, the owner of an air-rifle, shooting gallery was found unconscious on the ground. Apparently, he received a massive electric shock as he was connecting up his shooting gallery to the main fusebox for the fairground. The voltage stopped the 36-year-old man’s heart, leaving him on the brink of imminent death.

This was around nine in the evening and thanks to the rapid action of duty medical staff, who managed to restart his heart, his life was saved, despite eight minutes having passed in cardiac arrest. He was rushed to Hospital Virgen de las Nieves  in Granada in a serious state and placed in the Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos (UCI). His medical state is described as “evolving favourably.”

The above was the original story known to the press up until now but this morning it turns out that the ICU doctors informed his family that he had not received an electric shock but instead suffered from an undiagnosed heart problem which had caused an acute myocardial infarction. The good news is that he is now out of the ICU and on a ward, although he remembers nothing of what had happened.
