Rubbish in The River

The Almuñécar branch of Convergencia Andaluza (CA) claims that many locals are complaining about the rubbish accumulating on the riverbed of Río Verde.

ALM Rubbish in The RiverAs can be seen in the accompanying photograph, there are all sorts of household items, including descarded furniture, piled up against the riverbank walls. This is just down from the Barranco de Ítrabo track next to the sewage processing plant.

“The riverbed has become an authentic rubbish tip, which has been made clear to the Herrera-Ruiz Joya cabinet (administration) through a missive entered into the municipal registry on the 22nd of June,” said the CA, adding, “we requested the urgent adoption of all necessary measures to tackle the problem, through increasing vigilance and the control & frequency of rubbish collection in the area.”

The CA press release went on, “despite this; i.e., our complaint and those of the locals, nothing has been done – we have come up against a wall of inefficiency.”

Editorial comment: the problem is, quite apart from the eyesore, should we get a flash flood, which is not uncommon at the end of July, then all this furnitures will end up in the beach or on the seabed.

There is a free collection service of large items for residents of Almunecar and La Herradura (not sure about local inland areas, but I would imagine they are covered also), so there is no excuse to dump
rubbish in the riverbed. I used the service recently, but had to ring three times for them to take away
    three old mattresses. 900 107 709

Barry: the old furniture comes from nearby cortijos – it’s quicker to dump them in the river than to drive all the way to town. The way it works is that traditionally, cortijos are furnish with the old furniture from your home. You get more new stuff at home, you take it to the cortijo and dump the previous stuff.

Funny thing really. Locals are complaining about rubbish being dumped.
I’m no dumping expert. 😂 But would persons drive from miles around to dump the rubbish. Or some locals are not so civically minded. The matter then lies with the locals themselves. Either stand up and be counted or turn the blind eye and whinge. !!

Agree in that fly tipping is bad on a number of fronts including the poor local authority and tax payers who end up paying for it’s clearance. As in the UK the chances of the dumpers getting caught are minimal so the anti-social/environment dullards who do alas will continue to do do

The problem , same as UK. Lazy lazy gits. Cannot or will not go to a tip. I know Spanish tips have odd hours.
But sorry. It’s a disgrace and they should get their butts kicked in law. Better even if they dumped them by the bins. Not the Rio. Still such persons exist everywhere. Scum. !!
