Salobreña's two beach dependencies, La Caleta and La Guardia, have several days of fiestas lined up for La Virgen del Carmen, starting tomorrow with a foam party.

SAL Virgen del Carmen 400x250 boat processionThings kick off with a fiesta in the main square of La Guardia at 18.30h with the Fiesta del Agua, followed two hours later with the foam party – take your shaving kit and save on shaving cream!

On Sunday it is the Fería de Día in the Plaza de la Casa de la Cultura in La Caleta with grub and canned music provided by a DJ.

Then, on the 14th there’s a special dinner for the elderly at 19.00h in the Centro de Mayores in La Caleta – no smuggling your wrinkles and a borrowed Zimmer frame to the party on the off chance of free nosh!

Anyway, at 20.00 there’s a parade followed at 21.00h in La Guardia for the Gran Sardinada with a dance-band at 23.00h destroying your sanity and hearing capacity.

Then on Friday the 15th at 21.00h there is the brass-band competition (Certamen de Bandas de Música) in the Plaza de la Cultura in La Caleta, followed by another knees up at 23.00h until your ears bleed.

Saturday the 16th there will be a Cervezada (the name is explanation enough) in the Plaza del Lavadero (Caleta) starting at 13.00h, followed at 16.00h by a kiddies’ gymkhana through the streets of La Caleta and La Guardia.

At 20.00h there will be a church service held in the front courtyard of the old sugar factory followed by a procession where the Virgen will be taken to the beach and then onto a small boat as part of the procession.

Finally, at 23.00h there will be a firework display on the beach in front of La Caleta where they will attempt to set fire to the vega behind them with a barrage of rockets and look surprised when it happens. And just when you thought it was all over… at midnight there’s another knees up in the Plaza de la Casa de la Cultura.

This year there will be no human sacrifices as the victim said that he couldn’t make it owing to other commitments.
