After a lot of paper shuffling in the halls of the Junta de Andalucía, work is going ahead to dismantle the fish pens off Salobreña beaches.
The abandoned fish pens actually lie in a protected area; Zona de Especial Conservación del Carrizal (ZEC) and after years of being abandoned what is left of the pens is both an eyesore and causing damage to this protected area.
“In these last few years we have seen how effluence from the fish factory/mussel beds have ended up on the beaches,” said the Councillor from the Environment, Angela Rodríguez, adding, “our fauna, flora, seabed and beaches have suffered pollution and over several years we have demanded before different administrations that they be removed.”
It was in a plenary meeting on the 28th of February that a motion was approved to urge the Ministry of agriculture, fishing & livestock belonging to the Junta to take immediate action. They received a reply to say that the Junta had ordered the company that owns the installations to remove them and to restore the area to its original state; i.e., clean up the contamination left on the rocks, beaches and seabed.
