A reader who has just undergone a very lengthy operation in Granada writes an open letter to thank the whole staff at the hospitals were he was attended.
Martin,
I had decided to write this letter before seeing the articles about losing two cardiologists and the article about the street naming for health professionals.
May I use the hallowed pages of the Seaside Gazette to give a huge ‘thank you’ to some overlooked people, as I cannot do so myself. I refer to all the staff of both Santa Ana in Motril and San Cecilio (PTS) Granada hospitals.
I am back home from San Cecilio after having a life changing, 11-hour operation last Monday. Exactly 11 months ago, I also had a serious, emergency, life-saving operation at Santa Ana.
In both instances, the staff, from the ‘lowliest cleaner’ to the ‘highest consultant,’ have been amazing.
My Spanish is quite poor, but I was treated with nothing but kindness and sympathy, especially after a fairly considerable, unforeseen condition resulting from the operation.
Even this has been handled incredibly – I have two consultant’s appointments on Wednesday after the long, holiday weekend!
From talking with my lovely (male and female!) nurses in both hospitals, it seems the majority are doing two jobs just to survive and I find this shocking and amazing. Despite this, my overriding memory is of the laughter and happiness that always seemed prevalent in the background.
I do hope that some of my medical professionals read this. To all of you, thank you so much for the great care you have given and continue to provide.
Saludos y besos, Dave Toms
