If you're a bit of a Mr. Magoo behind the wheel, by law you should always carry a spare set of specs with you, even if you wear contact lenses.

SPN Mr MagooSo it is no surprise that the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT), has issued a warning on ‘road hypnosis’ for drivers who wear glasses or contact lenses.

According to the medical advisor for the DGT, Elena Valdés, there is now a list of recommendations for driving if you have less than good sight.

The DGT not only recommends that you wear your glasses for the whole trip, but also includes a list of ocular diseases that will mean that your driving licence would be withdrawn. For the long sighted, they recommend that you use bifocal/progressive glasses so that you can read your dashboard instruments

Furthermore, the DGT recommends that you have sunglasses with you to avoid being dazzled during certain moments of the day. If you have poor night vision, they simply recommend that you don’t drive after night or during bad weather when only poor light exists.
