The Policía Nacional in Granada managed to arrest an 18-year-old man, accused of setting light to rubbish hoppers in the Chana area of the city.
The rapid action by the police, cordoning off the area so that the fire service could get to the fire unhindered, was crucial in putting the fire out before it could damage other nearby hoppers, parked cars and the facade of the building.
However, even so, as can be seen from the photo, the hopper was completely burnt out.
Citizen cooperation was crucial for the identification and tracking down of the suspect, who has since appeared before a magistrate pending trial.
The incident took place around 20.00h yesterday evening on a street within the barrio of Chana, which was when the police received a call informing them about a rubbish hopper on fire, up against the facade of a building. Note: you can translate barrio roughly for, ‘quarter’,
Witnesses had seen the suspect, who has a criminal record, moments before the fire broke out, introducing what appeared to be some kind of firework into the container. These eyewitnesses said that he had remained next to the hopper even when the first flames had begun to appear. For this reason, they were able to provide a good description of the suspect, which led to his arrest.
