Plácido Domingo will be the star attraction at the 140th anniversary of Motril's Teatro Calderón, which will be held next spring.
This world-renowned tenor will be the most famous person to ever perform in Motril’s theatre so it is a big ‘catch’ for this important anniversary of the inauguration of the building.
The Mayor of Motril, Luisa García Chamorro, considers that Motril will join the ranks of the “most important cultural spaces in the world,” thanks to Plácido Domingo performing there.
“The theatre is going to ‘internationalise’ at the hands of this Titan of the world of opera,” she said.
She also pointed out that this concert was originally planned for December 2021 but with the doubts raised over the pandemic, it has been put off to March 2022.
As for the tenor himself, this invitation to perform is a “double honour,” he considers, because it allows him to celebrate the anniversary of one of the oldest theatres in Spain, further qualifying it as “a jewel.”
It also reminds him of his mother, Pepita Embil, he said, who used to perform in the Teatro Calderón in one of the most famous Zarzuelas written by Maestro Moreno Torroba, La Caramba, which was set in Motril.
