Marauding Medusas

Yellow flags sprang up on Almuñécar's beaches yesterday announcing the presence of jellyfish - summer's officially here!

COS JellyfishWhilst Almuñécar played host to our transparent trespassers, La Herradura waited in futile expection for their appearance but the jellyfish stayed on the other side of Punta de la Mona  – a clear indication that La Herradura is ready for independence!

Now these are the little blighters that sneak around in the surf sniggering with nefarious intent. Yet they don’t always hang around once they appear but rather waft in and out with the changing currents during the day.

Unlike previous summers, they haven’t arrived in swarms of such quantities that the Town Hall would close the beach or step up beach cleaning activity, but even so, gargling with one is not recommended.

But the nuisance caused by jellyfish pales by comparison with that produced by lunatics on jetskis. Yesterday afternoon the Guardia Civil made an appearance on La Herradura beach, scowling and growling at jetski users, as a warning.
