An 18-year-old man was arrested, accused of breaking and entering a chiringuito on the playa de Castell de Ferro late last month.
The burglary, which took place during the early hours of the 29th of July, was carried out by breaking in through the roof. Once inside the suspect allegedly stole several bottles of spirits and other items with a total value of 750 euros. The cost to repair the damage to the premises will be much more than that, as he smashed a glass door to get out.
The Castell-based Guardia Civil began investigating the break-in and questioned a group of youths who tend to congregate in that area well into the small hours of the morning. They obtained information that one of their number had taken in a homeless person whom they had met during their get-togethers. This person had brought with him several bottles of spirits.
The police went to this witness’s house and recovered the stolen bottles and confirmed that they matched the bottles taken from the chiringuito and returned (what was left) to their rightful owner.
Having identified the suspect – somebody they had already had dealings with – they began to carry out a search around town and found him hiding out in a building under construction.
