The Guardia Civil arrested an 18-year-old man in Almuñécar who allegedly attacked his victims from behind towards the end of last month.
He and accomplices are thought to be responsible for several such attacks, surprising their victims from behind in order to snatch their belongings from them or demanding that they handed them over under the threat of being stabbed or slashed with knives.
The police had witnessed an increase in muggings in June and sent out patrols to disuade would-be muggers by their presence, whilst at the same time opening an investigation into the attacks.
Fortunately, during one such mugging the patrol had been very close to hand and had arrived in time to obtain accurate descriptions of the assailant. The Guardia Civil immediately caught up with the suspect, still carrying on him stolen items from previous muggings, which the suspect had decided to use himself.
This man was arrested pending appearing before a magistrate to decide his immediate fate until his case comes up. However, the police are continuing with their investigations into all of the recent cases of muggings in Almuñécar.
