The first day of the year saw snowfall on the Granada plateau (altiplano) in the north-east of the province.
The Agencia estatal de Meteorología (Aemet) recorded between 4cm and 18cm of snow with the snow line coming down from 1,000 metres to just 500 metres.
It was in the parts of the province of around 1,000 metres that problems began, though, with drivers needing the use of snow chains at the Puerto de la Ragua, which is the mountain pass between the plateau and the Alpujarra.
Several roads in the Guadix and Baza areas have been affected, as has the A-395 that leads up to the Sierra Nevada, starting between kilometre points 31 and 32.
The DGT (Traffic Department) also issued warnings for the A-337 (La Calahorra) where snow chains are also necessary, as well as where it passes through Puebla de Don Fadrique between kilometre points 59 and 89.
