The main labour unions for the various police forces protested outside Motril Town Hall, demanding more safety measures and virus testing for officers.
“Since May, we have not been tested for Coronavirus and there has been eleven positive cases or close contact within the Policía Local,”, explained a union representative (SIPLG) Daniel Ortega, adding, “we’re only asking to have PCRs before coming on duty.”
The police unions want a shift system where the work force is split into separate shifts which do not coincide thus avoiding contagion cases spreading through the whole work force.
Furthermore, the station changing rooms are situated in a cramped, unventilated basement, says the union representative, Sr. Ortega and thus demands that the Town Hall provides an alternative space.
The union representatives asked for the Mayor to come out and meet with them but this did not materialise, although the Councillor for Citizen Safety, Mara Escámez did come out onto the square to hear their demands.
She later said that the PCR testing that is carried out is in accordance with standing, health regulations but that the majority of the demands were reasonable. She also said that an alternative changing area will be provided until the new police station is finished.
