Opposition against Pay Rise

SAL Gustavo Aybar against Payrise OnLThe Salobreña branch of the Partido Popular has registered a formal request for the recently approved pay rise for the Mayor to be urgently repealed.

A motion was passed during the Plenary Meeting of the Town Council on the 11th of September which effectively gave the Mayor, María Eugenia Rufino, a 14,000-euro increase to her annual salary.

Certain councillors and political advisors to the governing party received a 9,000-euro hike to their salaries, as well.

To give you an idea what a 14,000-euro pay rise amounts to, the Mayor recently announced that the Town Hall would set aside 15,000 euros for schools to tackle extra-cleaning measures (sterilisation etc) at the town’s schools.

In fact, the PP claims that if there is 252,000 extra euros in the budget to pay for these salary increases, the money would be better spent on “social measures.” More specifically, to meet the extra costs that the pandemic is causing the municipality.

Furthermore, part of the money could go to stocking the food banks, which supply many families in economic difficulties with basic foodstuffs.
