The Provincial Delegate for the Central Government has told Salobreña that they can’t put CCTV on the beaches to make sure people are keeping their distance.
The Town Hall had wanted to install five cameras on the beach lookout towers along with tannoy speakers, so the Mayor, María Eugenia Rufino sent off a request for permission in June.
However, the Provincial Delegate, Sandra García, rejected the request because she had put it before the video-committee that deals with CCTV usage come back with a negative response.
The commission considers that the cameras impose on people’s right to intimacy and control of their own image; i.e., what is done with it. The committee only approves CCTV installation when it concerns counter-crime measures or safety (motorways).
However, the commission did give them permission to set up a tannoy system…
