The Guardia Civil confiscated seven kilos of wedge clams (Donax trunculus) known as coquinas in Spanish when they stopped a car at a routine road check.

The incident took place on the  HU3401 near Valverde del Camino (Huelva) involving a 4×4  As the two occupants were rather jittery upon being stopped, the police decided to inspect the vehicle.

There were two beach coolers in the back of the vehicle containing the live moluscs. There was also fishing material for this kind of catch.

As the driver could not prove that they had been acquired legally, the police began filling out charge forms as the several laws had been infringed: capture, transporting, etc. The same policemen then returned the creatures to the sea on Playa de Isla Canela.
