At last humans are returning to coastal waters, but in their absence there have been huge but innocuous sharks, as well as this spectacular visitors, dolphins.
This pod of dolphins were seen about five nautical miles off Punta de la Mona, numbering around a dozen. But they’re not the first as on Monday some were spotted off the Playa de La Ensenada de los Berengueles in Almuñécar.
Dolphins don’t like inshore waters in the summer owing to the massive human presence; not only bathers but also jet skis, etc. Yet spring is their mating season when the ‘lads’ are showing off before the ‘lasse’ and getting into the occasional fisty cuffs – or flipper cuffs, if you prefer.
Anyway, they’ve popping over to see where all those noisy humans have got too this spring…

Wonderful to see the dolphins and know that the underwater life is thriving. Then yesterday, Saturday, a jet ski or two in La Herradura bay disturbed the peace and rode round and round for hours.
Isn’t it time we banned these thrill seeking devices from the bays full of people. Their noise is so invasive to us humans. And that’s nothing to the vibrational noise underwater which harms the fish. Must be a nightmare for them. No wonder the dolphins stay away.
It’s been such bliss with birdsong often being the only sound we hear. And how we’ve rejoiced in our renewed connection with nature and the simple pleasures it brings.
The hole in the ozone layer has miraculously closed. Didn’t take long! But if we don’t learn to reduce our carbon footprint it will soon be back.
Please can we start a campaign to ban jet skis from the bays or better still, ban them altogether! And hope the Young will seek their thrills in the sea by other methods – paddle boarding. Kayaking, scuba diving, snorkelling etc etc
