The Mayor of Badalona (Cataluña) was arrested at a road, check point by the autonomic police for breaking quarantine amongst other charges. The reason that they stopped him was that he was weaving all over the place.

But Mayor Álex Pastor wasn’t happy that they had dared to stop him and had a go at them. Not wise. Out came the breathalyser kit. He reminded them that he was the Mayor of Badalona  so they reminded him to blow into the device.

He refused so they arrested him for failing to conform, more or less.

Now the Mayor’s Party, thought it a jolly good idea to immediately suspend his membership and called upon him to relinquish his post, but added that they appreciated his good record as mayor.

However, Pastor had not won the most votes in the last municipal elections but through a political alliance had managed to wrestle the mayoralty for the PP candidate, ex-Mayor, Xavier García Albio (PP), who is now rubbing his hands together with so much glee that he is in danger of bursting into flames.

Yes he is going to put forward a motion of no confidence. You might think that Mayor Pastor is already history because he has been dropped like a hot stone by his own party, but under Spanish electoral law, the votes that he won were for him; not his party, so he could opt to become an independent in order to try and hang onto his seat.

In the meantime every political party in Badalona is wheeling and dealing to come up with a stable political alliance to run the Town Hall.
