Tornado in The Alpujarra

GRA ALP TornadoIt’s nice to report on something that doesn’t involve the present health crisis so a mini tornado in the Alpujarra is precisely that.

The 200 inhabitants of the tiny Alpujarra village of Turón were surprised when they saw what looked to be a tornado up in the hills. One of them published the video below showing this infrequent meteorological phenomenon.

The tornado struck Sunday morning and played havoc with an almendra plantation, which you can just about make out in the video.

According to AEMET (Agencia Estatal de Meteorología) this is a normal climatological event in Spain although, admittedly, not very frequent. It is caused by a mass of hot air ascending in a place of low atmospheric pressure, as was the case on Sunday around Turón.
