Mayor María Eugenia Rufino continues to press for a breakdown of Coronavirus-infection figures because until now they have been given on a provincial and comarca level. A comarca is an area division within a province.
She insists that municipal figures are imperative in order to fine tune municipal services for those infected and manage the situation in general.
The Mayor explained that they have the figures for the part of the comarca from Salobreña eastwards along the Costa Tropical, which put number of infected at around a hundred, but as she has knowledge of at least 50 cases in Salobreña alone, (four of whom have been hospitalised) the comarca figure seems improbable.
The problem is there has been no testing of the population in Salobreña so nobody knows the true figures, as there are probably scores of residents that are asymptomatic or have experienced mild symptoms associated with a normal case of flu and considered it as such.
What worries her is if the case of Salobreña can be extrapolated on a national level, then the number of cases given in official figures could be wildly inaccurate and understated.
For the above reason, the Mayor believes that municipal-level figures are an “absolute necessity.” She also said that she couldn’t understand why anybody would want to spin the figures.
