The Government has decided to extend the Lock Down two more weeks, bringing the end – unless extended again – until the 26th of April.
The decision was made this morning at a cabinet meeting after hearing the recommendations of the scientific commission, charged with examining all the data concerning the COVID-19 Pandemic.
The Chief Medical Advisor for PM, Fernando Simón, informed him that despite the positive news that is beginning to appear on the contagion-curve graph, tight control should be maintained to avoid a sudden increase in cases.
However, this decision must be approved by the Lower House of Parliament, counting on opposition parties that have been critical with his handling of the health crisis, especially an alleged lack of consultation with them on the situation.
The request for an extension will be made on Tuesday at Cabinet level, with El Congreso being informed at 16.00h that same day and put before the Board of Party Spokespersons. It is envisaged that the motion will be tabled on Thursday the 9th.
The Government shouldn’t have any difficulty getting the extension approved but it is expected to receive much criticism over a lack of “transparency” as the price for backing from the PP and other opposition parties.
What many will be wanting to know is what economic packages and concessions this extension will be accompanied by.
