A crisis like this one brings out the best of people in most, although for others the worst, but you don’t have to look far for instances of the former.
Several small businesses in Motril; bakeries and delicatessens, have clubbed together to provide cold-meat-filled bread rolls for hospital staff. The reason, they realised, is that there are no cafeterias open where these hard-pressed workers can buy them.
Two businesses provide the fillings: Paladares de la Alpujarra and Embutidos Esteban, whilst three bakeries provide the rolls (Espiga de Oro II, El Molino and Maranata – the last is in Torrenueva). Between them they are knocking out 150 bocadillos a day for the hospital workers. A fourth baker run by Federico Jiménez, provides pastries on Sundays
It’s not just a case of free bocadillos for the hospital staff because the spirit of “doing your part,” manifests itself in many forms, such as the residents of the blocks of flats belonging to Urb. Río Guardiana and Urb. Río Darro who are busy knocking out protective masks for the Motril police forces and fire service.
So it is not only a case of hanging out of your window at eight in the evening each night and clapping in appreciation of the tremendous work being carried out by health workers and police forces.
