Hotel Riu Mónica in Nerja contacted the Policía Local in Frigiliana around 18.00 yesterday when a Belgian coupled failed to return from an outing there.
The couple had informed the hotel reception that they were going to cover a walk between the Nerja Caves and Frigiliana along Río Chíllar, taking in La Fuente del Esparto and Los Apretaderos.
A search was quickly organised comprising of the Head of the Frigiliana municipal police, Plácido Navas, a guarda rural, Julio Fernández and a Guardia Civil patrol.
After contacting the couple via their mobile phone, there followed a 3-hour search for them, coming across them in an area with difficult access known as the Lomillas del Chíllar, behind the Cruz del Pinto. «
They got lost quite near the village of Frigiliana, heading South instead – they had been walking since 07.00h that morning, so they were exhausted and didn’t know which way to head.
Once brought back to Nerja it was not necessary to visit the medical centre.
A Guarda Rural, by the way, is like a park keeper but for the countryside in general, tasked with keeping an eye on plantations and cortijos in the area for potential theft. They know the area like the backs of their hands so are often called upon by the Guardia Civil to help out in searches.
