At the beginning of the month there was a collision between a train and a car that had been driving along the rails in Galicia for reasons unknown.
The accident took place around 05.00h in the morning on the Palencia-La Coruña line where it passes through the municipality of Abegondo (Coruña).
The train driver immediately applied the brakes when he saw the car but was unable to avoid slamming into it.
Despite the impact, the driver was taken to hospital with injuries that were not life threatening. However, blood tests revealed that he had consumed both alcohol and drugs. The same tests (as is the protocol) were carried out on the train driver but his results came back negative.
The line remained blocked until 10.15h that same morning as time was needed for engineers to unblock the emergency brakes on the train, and to remove the wreckage of the car.
