An out-of-season hill fire broke out above the Playa del Muerto in Cotobro, Almuñécar yesterday evening.
The local fire brigade supported by Infoca tackled the fire, which broke out some time before 18.00h It took two hours to bring under control and extinguish although an Infoca squad stayed behind to make sure that it did not spring up again.
The fire crept up the steep hillside-cum-cliff, started virtually at the beach, threatening the Urbanización La Atalaya at the top. Fortunately, the wind changed direction so that those fighting the fire were able to prevent this happening.
There are two abandoned villas half way up the hillside that acted as firebreaks, too, as they are only bare concrete and brick constructions.
